The Imperial Novice Anaesthesia Course content has been derived from the curriculum and is based on the Initial Assessment of Competency (IAC). The IAC needs to be obtained by novice anaesthetists within their first 3-6 months of anaesthesia training in order to practice without immediate supervision. The course runs over five days and includes four days of lectures and workshop-based small group teaching. The fifth day is a simulation day, where trainees are able to work through different scenarios in order to build their confidence in areas that are yet unfamiliar, though part of everyday anaesthetic practice.
We have a website which is solely for your use and education; it compliments the material you will come across on the course and will aid your early progress. The website contains all the course lectures and materials. Of particular importance are guidelines and links to websites with advice on joining speciality specific organisations, as well as information on where to go for help. It is only accessible with an allocated login and password. You can find the website at www.imperialnovice.co.uk. All course candidates will be contacted by the course directors in July and access to the website and important points such as the organisation of study leave will be explained in greater detail.
The course is run by a group of consultants and post FRCA specialist trainees, who volunteer their time to teach and impart their ‘pearls of wisdom’. The course is mandatory for all Imperial School of Anaesthesia core trainees as well as those enrolled in the ACCS and standalone Intensive care medicine trainees with a rotation in anaesthetics.
Since its formation in 2010, the course has provided a valuable resource to all novices within the region and we have always received excellent feedback. However, we rely on the kindness of consultants and post FRCA registrars to volunteer their time to be members of our faculty. As you may be aware, as of last year the course is now based at Northwick Park Hospital (NPH) and St Mary’s Hospital (SMH) and runs over five days; four days of lecture and workshop-based teaching (at NPH) and a day of simulation training (at SMH). In order to deliver the workshops and small group teaching, we need a sizeable faculty of experienced anaesthetists.

We are very keen for there to be a strong consultant and registrar presence from across our region. Those of you who have contributed in previous years are, of course, welcome again, and we truly appreciate your continued support. In addition to the excellent feedback received from the candidates, we have had extremely positive comments from our previous faculty members. It has been clear from those who have taken part previously that they have immensely enjoyed their teaching experience. We provide faculty members with support as well as materials for all teaching activities.
If you are interested, please contact us (imperialnovice@yahoo.co.uk) with the date or dates you may be available and we will contact you as soon as possible. Once we have received sufficient responses, we will begin to allocate sessions and let you know what would be required of you. Thank you so much for your help and support.
