6 Month Posts – 2 available (6 months each) – starting May and November 2022

Post Supervisor: Dr David Vaughan & Dr Raj Chaggar

Applications are welcome from Imperial trainees who will be ST5 and above when starting for the airway/head and neck fellowship at Northwick Park hospital. This post is only open to Imperial anaesthetic trainees. It is an ‘in scheme’ post so application /funding for OOPE is not necessary.

This post will provide extensive exposure to all areas of ENT, maxillofacial and head and neck cancer surgery. This includes laryngopharyngectomy, craniofacial resection and reconstruction, tracheal resection, free flap reconstruction, intrathoracic goitre surgery, voice surgery, and the full range of routine rhinology, otology and oromaxillofacial surgery. The unit has over 30 ENT and maxillofacial surgeons, as well as associated plastics teams.

The post will also include full training in advanced airway management techniques. At the end of the fellowship the post holder will be competent at awake and asleep fibreoptic intubation, videolaryngoscopy and rigid and flexible bronchoscopy. In addition skills in transtracheal, supra and infraglottic jet ventilation, retrograde intubation and percutaneous tracheostomy may be gained.

The post holder will be expected to participate in and initiate research and audit, and see this through to presentation and publication. Our unit also actively collaborates in the Head and Neck research group HANA.

The post holder will assist with training in airway management for more junior team members, and with teaching to medical and paramedical staff outside the department on an ad hoc basis.

Other Clinical Duties

The post holder will participate in the senior ST rota with its attendant duties.

Important Qualities

Interest in head and neck anaesthesia

Initiative and ability to develop ideas

The research element of this post will entail self directed work, sometimes to strict deadlines. There is a great degree of flexibility in the post to fit the needs and wishes of the fellow, their interests and research project. This will be a six month period of hard work, but the more you put in, the more you are likely to get out!
