A brief introduction

Trainees rotate through teaching and district general hospitals in north west London, as well as some specialist hospitals in central London

Ealing Hospital is a busy district general hospital in West London. It is located on the outskirts of Ealing, in Southall, and is a ten-minute drive from Ealing Broadway.

The anaesthetic department consists of seven anaesthetic consultants and five ICU consultants. There are around twenty juniors and associate specialists spread over ICU and theatres/obstetrics.

There are seven general operating theatres. The surgical specialties offered at Ealing Hospital are:

  • General surgery
  • Trauma and orthopaedics
  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology
  • Urology
  • Dental
  • Opthalmology

The labour ward consists of 7 delivery rooms, 2 theatres and a four bedded recovery unit. It is currently undergoing an expansion. There are around 3000 deliveries per year.

The Intensive Care Unit has 9 beds that can take up to seven level 3 patients.

Out-of-hours, theatres are covered by an SHO or registrar, obstetrics and ICU are covered by trust grades or associate specialists.  All are supervised by non-resident anaesthetic and ICU consultants.

Departmental teaching takes place on Tuesday morning, Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning. There is also a journal club every Friday morning.

There is plenty of opportunity to get involved in audits and teaching.

ACCS Trainee perspective

"Anaesthetics at Ealing Hospital has been a great place to gain my IAC, some of the Consultants go out of their way to come in and teach trainees even on their days off with regular sessions.  I've managed to learn advanced methods such as TIVA and ultrasound and other airways skills which other trainees perhaps do not get exposure to. The variety of cases makes oncalls very interesting and are largely very well-supported by Consultants and Associate Specialists and I think my logbook numbers are higher than some of my peers at other places.

Ealing has also given us the opportunity to complete many audits and present them at national meetings".

I would like to also highlight that Dr Leena Ali, College Tutor, has been supremely supportive of myself and my colleagues and we have felt very protected and encouraged by her mentorship.
