The Hospital
Hillingdon Hospital is a friendly but busy DGH situated in Uxbridge, a short drive away from Heathrow Airport. It is split over two sites with Mount Vernon Hospital which has a purpose built, new theatre complex which is a 15-20 minute drive away. Hillingdon serves a local population of around 350,000 as well as receiving patients from all over the world who are brought in from Heathrow to the busy A&E which is due to be expanded over the next few years. The labour ward is fairly busy with just under 5000 deliveries a year, and has recently received a grant from central government for redevelopment.
Hillingdon has a large pain department with specialists in acute and chronic pain and provides intermediate and advanced pain training for registrars. The Hillingdon site has a daily, dedicated orthopaedic trauma and NCEPOD lists, as well as general surgery, urology, gynaecology, dental and ophthalmology with weekly paediatric lists.
There is a nine bedded HDU/ITU which receives a mix of medical and surgical patients. This unit is staffed by consultants and SHOs during the day with a registrar covering at night.
Mount Vernon Hospital has a newly built Treatment Centre where a complex of four theatres is located. A large amount of elective orthopaedic surgery is done here, including spinal surgery and joint replacements, as well as frequent pain lists. Mount Vernon also operates some urology and radiotherapy lists as well as general surgical cases. There is a regional cancer centre on site, and anaesthetists provide support to their patients out of hours.
Both hospitals are renowned for being great places to work and the anaesthetic department is very friendly. There is a small library in the postgraduate centre which is open to trainees 24 hours a day and the librarians are very willing to help you obtain any material which you may need. The postgraduate centre also offers a daily, home cooked lunch for doctors that is very tasty and far cheaper than the canteen.
Overall, a fairly busy DGH with friendly staff, which is good for generalist experience.
